Are We Listening?
Dr. Jed N. Snyder
Hebrews 12:25 (ESV)
It is impossible to know what the horror of the mass shootings in Sutherland Springs, Texas was. We, as Christians, weep with the mourners, while all the while realizing things. We could have been worshipping in a similar situation. We could be burying our unexpected dead. We could be reeling with a future bereft of one or more of our family, fellow-worshipers or friends. But for God’s grace, there go I.
The Bible points us in the right direction if we are willing to hear what God has told us in His Word. God is calling us to live on the “alert.” We should live “ready.”
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. Romans 8:32 (ESV)
God’s great gift, the death of His Son for us, was to make it possible us to be ready. This next verse should be considered in all its power and intensity.
For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven. Hebrews 12:25 (ESV)
So, two questions. Are you ready? Are all your loved ones and co-workers ready? We are not likely to be gunned down by some deranged individual, but we could easily be mowed down by a drunk driver or simply overrun in a crosswalk on a busy street. An accomplished virtuoso pianist was walking in Philadelphia. We was almost instantly killed by a passing car. Such loss to us of a brilliant young musician. He was ready. I hope you are. I know I am.
Happy living “ready.”
