2017 ENDURING SPIRIT AWARDS

Pictured artist Tyrone Geter.

The Friends of African American Art and Culture (FAAAC) membership affiliate at the Columbia Museum of Art will honor women in the Midlands who embody the artwork of Tyrone Geter with the 2017 Enduring Spirit Awards.

Geter celebrates the relationship between mothers, daughters, and sisters—Black women—whose personal and public sacrifices made it possible for  their progeny to advance. This is a major theme in much of his work. His work is deeply informed by the experience and example of his mother, who had just a third-grade education and spent her life as a domestic worker.

“My work is compassion, hope, justice, and perseverance, things I learned from my mother,” Geter says in an artist’s statement. “It seeks to speak to and for those with no voice.”

There are four categories in which persons were nominated.
